Turkey – a photo travel guide

Below are the highlights of my 2 week road trip across Turkey.

Istanbul – an inviting city, which is so easy to blend into and be a part of

A view from a rooftop restaurant with kind service and good food – Hanzade Restaurant
Inside the magical cathedral converted into a mosque – AyaSofya (Hagia Sophia).
A well dressed gentleman fixing his bait to fish, on the Bosphorus of course!
Exploring the streets after the busy trading day, is the best time.
A hamam (Turkish bath) is a must do when in Turkey. Visiting Cagaloglu Hamami left me feeling new!

Safranbolu – full of Ottoman architecture and character

One of the many Ottoman houses on the streets of Safranbolu.
I really enjoyed staying in a restored Ottoman house – Serbetci Konak.
We went for a lovely hike from Safranbolu to Crystal Terrace (an observation deck)
George – a dog we named who followed us for the entire hike. Wish we could take him home.

Sumela Monestary

A stunning monastery in the middle of the mountains.
The climb is about 2 miles – but up steps. The walk on the road is more scenic. I enjoyed them both!

Ani – in Kars

I felt dwarfed by the stunning building of Ani on the Turkish/Armenian border.
It felt like a proper lost city.
In Ani there are several places where you can just sit and wonder about it’s glorious past.

The landscapes during a road trip

I loved some of the remote villages we passed in the mountains.
The diverse and ever-changing scenery kept me guessing what was next.
There are so many castle ruins that we came across.
Just when I thought there was no civilisation in sight, a little village would appear.
This is exactly how the Turkey road trip left me feeling.

The people of Turkey – the best part of the country

Met this lovely lady in the mountains of Turkey. She was ever so delighted to chat with us even though we did not share a common language.
When I asked her if I could take her photo – she happy nodded, fixed her scarf and stood proud.
These kids in the mountains were full of life and just enjoying a rainy afternoon.
This lovely family ran a restaurant (Uzunali Dag Tesisleri) in the mountains (about 6 km from Sumela Monastery).
